Where are the best campsites in Europe?

The campsites listed in the Caravan Club Touring Europe guides are not "the best campgrounds" according inspectors, who may have an agenda, but are submitted by a caravan, motorhome or tent user who really liked the campsite.

When you think about it, who wants to promote a rubbish campsite? Also, most people never quite get around to submitting reviews unless they are really enthusiastic about a place.

Unpopular campsites are automatically removed from the guide because all camp sites must have received a review in the previous 6 years. The result is a diversity of popular campsites in Europe suitable for motorhomes, caravans and tents. Or put simply, the best campsites in Europe!

Touring Europe by the Caravan and Motorhome Club details campsites for motorhomes, caravans and tents in Central Europe, South East Europe, Benelux and Scandinavia. There are separate camping guides for France and Spain and Portugal. The 81-page introduction provides excellent touring advice about everything from medical issues to European speed limits.

Please note the cover claims 'over 2000 sites', but we counted 1806 only.

Where to camp in Europe with your tent, caravan or motorhome

All Caravan and Motorhome Club Touring guides provide GPS coordinates and full contact details. The coordinates are printed in the Long and Lat format: 43.69018, 7.15643.

As with all Caravan Club books the details and directions are comprehensive, but you have to learn the 200 abbreviations used to convey all aspects of the campsite directions, facilities and prices.

Campsites are marked on the maps at the rear of each section and each entry gives you the map number and grid reference.

Useful travel information for Europe

The additional information in the Caravan and Motorhome Club Touring Europe guide contains all the advice you need on mountain passes, required equipment, speed limits, fuel prices and signs. At the start of each country more specific information is provided. At the rear of each country, maps detail the campsite locations, indicating which ones are open all year.

These guides are ideal for the independent traveller wanting a good cross section of campsites throughout the countries and are extremely helpful when travelling out of season. In short, these are the best paper campsite guides available. We used them extensively when we were full-timing, they are worth every penny.

How does it compare to other European campsite guides?

Caravan Club Touring Europe, as a single compendium, lists more caravan sites in Germany, Italy, Greece, the Baltic, and Scandinavia than any other paper campsite guide written in English that we know of. Caravan and Motorhome Club Europe users nominate and provide the details of the campsites including costs, opening times, facilities, hook-up amperage, size of site, dogs welcome, shade, levels, local attractions, ambiance, etc and excellent directions. The submissions can be as old as 2012.

The touring information in the front of the guide is excellent and should not be overlooked. It covers all the necessary subjects of road law, but also a lot of other useful and need to know information about pets, ferries, insurance, money, tolls, mountain pass suitability, and country specific information. Maps at the back of the book show the locations of campsites against the local town and are colour-coded, red for those open all year (or at least open for 11 months of the year).

Going to Spain and Portugal or France?

Countries not covered in this guide have their own country-specific guides: 2018 Caravan and Motorhome Club Touring France, and 2018 Caravan and Motorhome Club Spain and Portugal.
