Description

Don't just have the same old camping holiday, take yourself on a food tour of Britain with this guide to 150 beautiful campsites located all around the British mainland. Each British campsite has been chosen for its location and its proximity to some of the best artisan producers the UK has to offer.

Discover the UK through your taste buds

This campsite guide come food tour is a collaboration between the AA and the Camping and Caravanning Club, written by columnist Ali Ray. Having travelled around Australia for a year in her yellow campervan, Custard, Ali has picked up quite a few recipes and tips for cooking in the great outdoors. That experience led her on to write a monthly column for the Camping and Caravanning Club magazine called ‘Eat Local’, in which she searches out the special products being produced in Great Britain.

How does Pitch Up, Eat Local work?

This book is the culmination of Ali and her young family’s gastronomic journey around England, Wales and Scotland. She has discovered local producers, farmers and artisans all over the country and this book shines a light on the delicious ingredients and food heritage unique to their local area. Each of the 50 regional sections focuses on a specific ingredient with an introduction to the ingredient and the people using or producing it that Ali has met along the way.

Each section recommends between 1 and 3 campsites (many of which are Camping and Caravanning Club Sites or CS's) with descriptions of the sites and contact details as well as a bit of information on the local food scene. This is followed by descriptions and locations of local farm shops, markets, butchers, vineyards and breweries which give you plenty of places to hunt for ingredients before starting up your barbecue or lighting the campfire back at the campground that evening.

Regional recipes to cook on the campfire

Each section also has at least one recipe which pulls inspiration from the local area. The recipes all focus on things that are easy to cook and eat outdoors, from a quick lamb curry in the Lake District, to moules on Anglesey, to luxurious cranachan desserts in Scotland.

The pages are full of lovely photos from around mainland Britain and enough drool-inducing food to inspire you to grab your apron and get cooking. So if you’re looking for a new way to approach your camping holiday, why not grab a copy of this book and let Great Britain’s blossoming food scene lead you on a journey that will fill your belly with great food and bring your loved ones together around the campfire.
