What is a Borghi?
A Borgo is a cluster of Italian houses positioned around a castle, a church or fortified abbey. Over time, markets, artisan activities and a new social class, the "bourgeoisie" were fostered there. The result has been the formation, over the centuries, of a dense network of small and medium-sized villages often surrounded by walls, characterised by their commercial and artisanal economy. They have remarkable cultural heritage and traditions and are are often surrounded by natural and agricultural landscapes. Although borghi did not have the status of cities, they exercised an urban role towards their territories during the centuries. The concept of "borgo" is so firmly rooted that it embodies, since the middle ages, a specific type of community living.
